Gene,

The software is called BirdJam. http://www.birdjam.com/
To use just the program, you have to own the Stokes Song Cd's for the west or east as a minimum before purchasing one of the regions for about $60. For those wanting a complete collection of east and west, the dual software package goes for $100, providing a $20 savings. The program is loaded with bird play lists based on habitat, family and species. It works in conjunction with I-tunes to upload the songs and lists to your I-pod device. There are add-ons for the calls of Arizona and Sonora Mexico and the Caribbean Costa Rica recordings last I looked. Of the nice features, including the preloaded play lists, it the elimination of the spoken introductions to each of the recordings. This way, you don't wind up hearing something like "EASTERN SCREECH-OWL" blasting across the woodland a moment before the recording plays. The site also sells preloaded I-pods with everything already included.

You could do all that this program does on your own by building your own play lists. I'm not sure how to program the I-pod to block out the voice intros though, but I'm sure that you could Google it and find instructions on modifying tracks somewhere. On the other hand, I'm not sure how many hours you want to spend doing this, so it's up to you to figure out how much your time is worth..

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Fw: birding tool

I received this e-mail request for information.  Would any of you be familiar with the technology?  (I am not.)  If so, and you would be willing to receive an e-mail from the requester, please respond to me off list and I will forward your e-mail address to her.
_____________

She says: "some sort of I-pod that birder's are using for bird calls, but I don't know the specifics.  I was hoping you would know what this is and could give me some more details so that I could purchase it on-line."
______________

Thanks for any assistance.
