Hi Everyone,

While watching a flock of about 40 goldfinches at Fort Smallwood today at around 3:20 p.m., I heard a single call note overhead that sounded perfect for EVENING GROSBEAK. I was surprised and frustrated when I couldn't track down its source, and I hesitate on the call because of this and the lack of more reports in our region. I searched for the bird for an hour without any luck, joined for part of the time by Matt Grey. I heard the call on the edge of the wet meadow across from the old battery (large stone structure). Many goldfinches and bluebirds are feeding on the abundant sweet gum seeds here, so there are a lot of birds to sort through. Unfortunately, the park is closed on Wednesdays, so I suppose this is more of a heads-up for now. Matt Grey, who works there, will surely be looking tomorrow, and I'll probably head over on Thursday. Maybe it will stop by our feeders and save me the walk. :)

Good birding,

Bill
