I spent the weekend visiting family in western Pennsylvania
but managed to get in some birding on the way there and back.
Noteworthy birds included the following:
Saturday, 11/15/08
Kershner's Pond, MD Rte. 17 south of Burkittsville, Frederick Co.
Great Blue Heron - 1
Canada Geese - many
Tundra Swan - 1
American Black Duck - several
NORTHERN SHOVELER - 1 male
Bufflehead - 2 males, 1 female
Ruddy Duck - quite a few
Monday, 11/17/08
Piney Reservoir, Garrett Co.
Belted Kingfisher - 1
Northern Harrier - 1 immature
Monday, 11/17/08
Rocky Gap State Park, Allegany Co.
Common Loon - 22 (one large group)
Mallard - 2
Green-winged Teal - 5
Bufflehead - 11 (mostly females)
I thought about stopping at Finzel Swamp but changed my mind
when I found that the road to the parking lot was covered with two
inches of new snow. (I was driving a little rental car with an
automatic transmission and barely managed to turn around and
get out of there, as it was.) My earliest taste of winter driving
in a long time!
