Today (Saturday, 11/29) I birded Kenilworth Park and the Arboretum with
Gary Allport, Greg Butcher & David Curson. Before Greg & David arrived,
Gary & I were overlooking the Kenilworth Aquatic Garden lagoon/marsh and
a big flock of Canada Geese took off and flew over. As they were
passing over the marsh, calling loudly, they got a VIRGINIA RAIL to join
in the chorus! A shocker for both of us. Later we tried to get it to
call again, but without luck.
Also at KP was the AMERICAN TREE SPARROW I found yesterday, along with 4
Yellow PALM WARBLERS (not seen yesterday) and 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
(my 5th warbler species in DC this weekend).
From there we went to the Arboretum where the most interesting birds
were 3 CHIPPING SPARROWS to add to the weekend's sparrow list, and
another PINE WARBLER - seen well by the 4 of us at the top of Hickey
Hill. Also in the pines were 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES.
Good birding,
