An alternate nest was present at the eagle nesting site near Tunis Mills in
Talbot County a few years ago. This site has been active for 15 years or
more. I can recall seeing the alternate at one time, but it is now gone -
either it blew down, or the original nest blew down, but only one is there
at present.

I have been told that eagles sometimes make "alternate nests" - a few weeks

ago the Ranger at Wye Island pointed out the location of the "primary" nest
and the "alternate nest" of a local pair. To the best of my recall, he
stated
that one nest was preferred, but if the nesting began late, if there was a
lot of activity around nesting time or weather was unfavorable, the pair
would
go to the alternate nest site.

Is this a possibility for the Great Falls nests? Anyone else witnessed
alternate-nest behaviors?

Would a second pair of eagles nest in such close proximity to the other
pair?? I thought eagles nested in a given territory so if the second nest
is
active wouldn't that mean that the older nest is likely to have been
abandoned??
It'll be interesting to see what happens but given the location I guess
it'll
be harder to actually see.? Maybe the eagles just wanted more privacy?
