With a long weekend coming in Mid-January for the Martin Luther King Holiday, many in the community often plan to make excursions to the shore or western MD to take advantage of the 3-day weekends associated with holidays. I want to warn everyone, that this particular weekend will also coincide with the presidential inauguration on Tuesday, January 20th. (For those federal employees working in DC and the counties immediately adjacent to DC, 1/20/09 is an additional holiday, making it 4 days off in a row). This event is expected to bring millions of visitors to the nation's capital to attend the festivities.

Most, if not all of the hotels with-in an hours drive of DC are already completely booked. Those that are close in but aren't booked are charging ridiculous rates for their rooms. Hotels beyond an hour's drive time are also filling up quickly. I attended a planning meeting yesterday for handling aviation traffic during this event and was informed that every hotel room with-in about 150-200 miles of DC is expected to be booked due to the number of persons coming into the area to attend. 10,000 buses are being brought in to shuttle people around, so driving on the area roadways will be a bit crowded, to say the least.

The reason for this message is to warn everyone that might be thinking about doing something that weekend that they may want to start planning early to possibly obtain accommodations for their travels. If you wait a few weeks, to maybe beyond the Christmas Holiday, you might find that there is still no room at the inn.
