I walked the river trail beside the C&O Canal at Great Falls again
yesterday.
There was an eagle in the new nest, sitting as they do when incubating,
though I can't imagine they could have eggs yet.
Also nearby on a snag was the second eagle. A bit up the river, a third
adult bald eagle flew from the Md.side over to Conn Island.
It will be interesting to see in February if this is the old pair of birds
on a new nest, or if it is a new pair of birds as well. Stay tuned!
Also on the river a dozen or so flying Common Mergansers, two bufflehead 3-4
Pied-billed grebes, a hundred or more ring-necked ducks, and lots of geese.
In the trees over the trail were lots of woodpeckers of the usual kinds
(Downy, Hairy, Red-bellied, Pileated), and lots of chickadees, titmice,
kinglets,.
It was a very birdy walk.
