MOS is sponsoring a birding trip to various hotspots in Texas on April 4 - 11, 2009, and we have spaces left for the low cost of $2500 per person for MOS members ($25 extra for non-members)!

We have specially designed this 8-day whirlwind tour along the Gulf Coast and the Rio Grande Valley for folks who have a busy schedule, but would like to hit both areas all in one trip. Our tour covers many of the varied habitats of the region; migrant traps on High Island, inland piney woods, coastal beaches and marshes, and the riparian ecosystem of the Rio Grande. We start with a boat trip to find the endangered Whooping Crane and continue south to Laguna Atascosa. Then we head to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. In addition to an astonishing concentration of more widespread birds, the Lower Rio Grande Valley is home to nearly 30 bird species found nowhere else in the US. We finish our loop back on the Gulf Coast with a visit to the
world-famous Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge to try for Black and Yellow Rails, and Bolivar Flats to add to our burgeoning list of marsh and shorebirds. Before we get on the plane, we will have a chance at a parting gift of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker.

Currently, Frontera Audubon in Westlaco is hosting a Blue Bunting and a
Crimson-collared Grosbeak! Masked Duck is also being seen regularly at
another location. Of course, there is no guarantee that these rarities will still be there, but you never know what else will show up in Texas.

For a detailed itinerary and further information on how to sign up for this fun trip, email Marcia Balestri (mebalestri łat˛ comcast.net) of course, using the @ sign instead of łat˛).
