Took my 2nd Hunting Quarter Rd winter count of the season this
morning. Returned to the car via River Rd because there was quite a bit of
shooting in the area. Despite the overcast sky and damp conditions it was a
good count- 37 species and another 4 on the return trip. Highlights were a
pair of Blue-winged Teal, a Red-headed Woodpecker, 10 Winter Wrens, 4
Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 12 Hermit Thrushes (4 on the count and 8 on the
return trip), a Fox Sparrow, and 3 flyover Pine Siskins (still haven't seen
any :only heard).
General impressions of this winter so far- Winter Wrens have
rebounded from a decline last winter, Ruby-crowned Kinglets are relatively
common, Am Robins are scarce as are House and Purple Finches.
