Hi all,

Thanks to George Jett getting the word out. On our way out toward the meadows, we were looking for the owl which we often seen in this area and looked up to a large flock of finch-like birds landed on a spruce tree of some sort and saw the pinkish/red body, black wing with long white wing bar, forked tail, large cross bill and called out to other three to look up. Only 8 were males. Didn't stay long, about 35 seconds.

If know where the club is, park at Stone Hill Rd and walk back to the entrance gate to the club, walk down the paved road and go to first left on a wide path, keep going and go to next one on the left and see the fallen pine tree up ahead, look up in spruce and white pine area.

George is right to keep an eye out. Pennsylvania has many thousands WW Crossbill all over the state with few red with them, mainly in western part of the state, few on eastern side. Yesterday, Steve Sanford and I went up to New Holland Reservoir in Lancaster County to see both crossbill but only get White-winged. Good look at adult and young males and later enjoying seeing several flocks overhead back and forth. Later that afternoon someone had one Red Crossbill. This area is full of Norway Spruce. Not far from Harford/Cecil Counties line.

In Baltimore area, I know of two places which might get them, one was along Worthington Ave. between Tufted Ave and the town of Glyndon before going to Reisterstown. Closer to Timber Knoll Rd. There is a row of very tall spruce tree looks similar to Norway but cone shape is different. There are thousands of cones in every trees. Second place was at the parking lot at Northern Central Rail Trail at Monkton on Monkton Rd east of Hereford. Same parking lot where we walked out to see the hammond's Flycatcher back in Nov 2005. There is 4-5 evergreen trees full of cones.

Hope someone have time to check these two places out in the next few days, colder weather this week should push more to the south.

Baltimore Bird Club's 11th in a series of weekly walks to follow the progress of Winter Arrival, next walk on 1/20/08 will be at Prettyboy Reservoir, at 820am. Check with me to make sure the trip is on by Mon evening.
