Hi Everyone,
I did a drive thru of Southwest Area Park Wednesday late afternoon. Rode down to the boat launch with the most excitement being the 9 Northern Shovelers at the Marsh . Got to the playground area about 4:00 . American crows were squalking in the trees behind the playground . Id say 20 -30 .
After about 10 minutes of listening to them squalk and some searching for the Pied Crow, the trees were swarmed with American Crows and the squalking sounded like a crowd at a Ravens game. . While some were covering the trees others were circleing around one . . I was thinking they were mobbing something and whatever it was didnt have a chance . Then came the screech of the Red Shouldered Hawk . He came in from the opposite direction of the Crows and landed in a tree about 300 feet from them and then screeched again . Im thinking that was dumb. and of course about 10 crows headed for him . He headed towards the boat launch. I pulled up to the gate of the old dog training area . I counted 300 crows as they headed towards the city. I started heading out when i found the little birds were coming out . Cardinals , Whitethroated sparrows , then in flew a mixed flock of Robins, Starling , Redwinged blackbirds, Juncos, Brownheaded cowbirds, and a Downy WP.
