As I write this, at 10:55 p.m., I can hear a continuation of an owl
serenade. A few minutes ago I stepped out on the back porch to listen and
could readily identify the separate calling of six Great Horned Owls. Two
of them were in the walnut trees within 100 ft of the back porch. Two
others were of to the left, along Leeds Creek about 1/4 mile away. The last
two were a bit more distant, off to the right. Each of the first two pairs
seemed to be singing in duet. It was not clear that they were doing
anything other than pair-bonding, for each of the pairs sounded as if they
were perfectly happy with each other right now and were not clearly dealing
with any territorial issues at this time.

In the midst of their calling a fox near the edge of the creek barked
several times.
