I birded between mileposts 39 and 42 (starting at 42, going
to 39, then back to 42) of the C&O canal from 7:25 to 11:45
am this morning as part of the C&O Canal Winter Bird Survey.
My aggregated report is below. Best birds for me were
COMMON RAVEN and WINTER WREN (but also *lots* of
woodpeckers, creepers, and bluebirds). I had just got on a
warbler when everyone got spooked by a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK --
the warbler was a drab olive color, gleaning the end of a
thin, bare branch about 20 ft up on the other side of the
canal. Orange-crowned??
