Konnichiwa MD Ospreyers -

From my vantage point, a smile appears on my face when I read the posts
regarding the Tufted Duck and Eurasian Wigeon that are visiting the Eastern
Shore. Since moving to Japan this past October, these are the two most
common ducks that I have observed. I've seen several dozen Tufted Ducks
wintering here in Okinawa and several hundred more in and around Tokyo. And
just last week while visiting Kyushu to see the wintering cranes and bird
the local area, I joked with my birding companion to shoot me if I heard the
monotonous whistling call of one more Eurasian Wigeon. Now an American
Wigeon among the hundreds of EUWI we observed certainly would have been a
treat! Although we didn't see Barrow's Goldeneye, three Baikal Teal
provided the duck highlight during that trip. BTW, the sight of 12,000+
cranes at the Arasaki Preserve was simply awesome.
