This morning I heard that John Hubbell and Dave Powell had found a flock of White-winged Crossbills along Hipsely Mill Road just north of the junction with Annapolis Rock Road at about 9:30 AM. By the time I arrived the crossbills were long gone so eventually went to a row of Spruce trees heavily loaded with cones about a mile away. Within a few minutes I found a flock of White-winged Crossbills quietly feeding. Enjoyed watching them for several minutes and managed to get a couple of photos during the brief times they were exposed. Then the flock became fairly vocal just before they flew off in a southerly direction at 1150AM. Counted 20 birds in the flock. Ironically, after looking for the Greater White-fronted Goose in vain this morning at Brighton Dam, I had gone to this same line of trees to look for WWCB at 8:30 but only saw a lone Blue Jay warming itself in the sun.
The rest of the group that had been looking for the crossbills arrived about 2 minutes after the WW Crossbills flew. Later, as we were standing around pondering our next move, Jeff Culler noticed a distant bird with white wingbars had popped up and Kurt Schwarz confirmed it as a female WW Crossbill. Later, three female WW Crossbills were well seen in these trees.
The tree-lined driveway is on the east side of Jennings Chapel Road about 1/4 - 1/2 mile southeast of the junction with Hipsely Mill Road. The driveway is a private road and parking is very limited along Jennings Chapel.
