I was driving along the coastal road just north of Fenwick Island yesterday
(Sunday) pm - the area is called South Bethany I believe, when a flock of
passerines drew my attention. Getting out of the car I realized they were tree
swallows. The flock was very active, alternately feasting on berries of a
Northern Bayberry bush and flying off in tight formation, only to return
moments later to the bush. They seemed hyperkinetic, as if on a StarBucks diet.
Other birds were sunning themselves on the West facing roof of the nearest
condo, their bodies flattened against the tiles. Some of the feeding birds
then alighted on the roof.
Do tree swallows winter in DE or is this an aberration? I would appreciate
any comments.
All 3 scoter spp were at Indian River Inlet together with a nice raftlet of
long-tailed ducks. I saw one out of three of the duck rarities at Cambridge
- the tufted duck. Last time I saw one of these was probably back in the
1960's on the River Dart in my native Devon.
