For anyone that plans to attend my Cecil Gulls fieldtrip tomorrow morning, I
cannot stress the following enough.

My winter gull trips are invariably held on one of the coldest and windiest
days of the winter. When you decide how much clothes you plan to wear
tomorrow, DOUBLE IT! I have led these trips where most of the participants
have left and gone home within the first hour. Some participants have shown
up in lightweight jackets and no long-johns. This is a big mistake. Be
forewarned that temperatures tomorrow morning will be in the teens and the
day is predicted to be windy. We will be standing most of the time and not
moving. I have made arrangements for us to visit the Cecil County Landfill
in the morning, where we should find the biggest concentrations of gulls.
Lunch at Woody's Crab House in North East. Afternoon at North East Town
Park. (Maybe Sunday at Conowingo.)

With all that said, I hope to see those of you that dare tomorrow morning.

Gene

Town Park and Cecil Landfill this Saturday

Cecil Bird Clubs "Cecil Gulls"

Learn to identify the different age classes of gulls with gull expert Gene
Scarpulla. Gene will show us how to pick out the rare gulls from the flocks
of usual suspects, which include Great Black-backed, Herring, Ring-billed,
and Bonaparte's. Possibilities are Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and White
winged Gulls such as Iceland.

Meet at 8:00 a.m. Saturday January 31, near the Wal-Mart at North East Plaza
intersection of Rtes. 272 and 40. We will carpool to our gull watching
location from there - there is limited parking. Be prepared to leave your
car or offer a ride to others.

Bring scope if you have one. Dress for extreme cold and/or wind and be
prepared for walking and then standing still while we scan the flocks. Be
aware that walking will be over rough ground, with possible muddy
conditions, and possibly up steep slopes.

Bring money for an optional thaw-out lunch at one of the seafood restaurants
in NorthEast.
