On Saturday's PG Winter Count, we drove along River Airport Rd, a few
miles below Merkle WMA. The much-reported Golden Ealgle, which we had
missed at Merkle, appeared at 1:30 flying down-river in wide circles (or
"cycloids" if you will). If not already mentioned, this is an adult, w/o
any white markings on wings or tail. The light brown nape caught the sun
strikingly at some aspects. He continued on until out of sight.
Almost no sooner had we parked to relay this sighting to interested
parties than we notice a W Snipe not 20' off the road, in full sun,
probing the now-soft ground to 1/2 a bill length. Such a photo-op will
not come again in a life-time.
Also of interest, the Milltown Landing hedgerow yielded >10
White-crowned Sparrows until we stopped counting. Savannahs were too
numnerous to count accurately. Curiously tho', no Tree or Vespers.
Excuse the late post; my e-mail down while changing servers (but not
address).
