Walter and I encountered a flock of about 400 Snow Geese very close to
the road as we returned from picking Ian up from a friend's house at
about 4:45 this afternoon. A quick check revealed a diminutive Cackling
Goose and a pair of adult Ross's Geese in the flock, along with ten blue
geese and two neck-collared snows. The collared birds were banded on
Bylot Island, Nunavut in 2006 and 2008. The flock was grazing on grass
in the cut-over cornfield southwest of the intersection of Fish Hatchery
and Handy Point roads. In addition, several hundred Canada Geese were
scattered around farther away on both sides of Fish Hatchery Road.
Good birding,
