On my way out of town yesterday (Friday, February 20) to spend the weekend in southeastern PA, I made several birding stops in Baltimore, Harford, and Cecil Counties. I was at Fort Armistead Park around 10:30, where the only noteworthy birds were a female CANVASBACK hanging out with the Mallards near the fishing pier and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. I scanned the seawall at Fort Carroll and the piers to the south but did not note any white, owl-shaped objects.

The two juvenile TRUMPETER SWANS, and several RING-NECKED DUCKS, were still present at the Lakeside Business Park in Edgewood.

My last stop was at Perryville Town Park. In the first cove near the road, as you drive in, there were 8 MUTE SWANS, a small raft of RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 or 4 PIED-BILLED GREBES, and several Mallards. Continuing around the loop road, I spotted a single male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER in the bay. Finally, in the upper part of Furnace Bay, there were thousands of TUNDRA SWANS, several hundred GADWALL, scaup, and Canada Geese, widely scattered small groups of COMMON MERGANSERS, a few HOODED MERGANSERS, and several BUFFLEHEADS. There was also a flock of at least a hundred CANVASBACKS asleep (they seem to do a lot of that) on the far shore - too far away to pick out any Redheads, however.

A swan and merganser trifecta for the day! Good birding!
