This afternoon from 4:45 to 5:30 the Short-eared Owls were putting on
their show along Starr Road (Rte 309) near Pemberton Manor. There were at
least three, possibly four, actively flying about and then dropping into the
grasses as they hunted. Two Northern Harriers were also present, as if
reluctant to give up their hunting duties of the day. Two Bald Eagles were
near the pond, and Eastern Meadowlarks, Horned Larks and Killdeer were also
in the area. To the east toward Queen Anne's about 60 Tundra Swan were on
another pond and across the road there was a flock of 5000 or more Snow
Geese. Pond ducks included 17 Ring-necks, four Pintail, four Blacks and a
few Mallards.
