This morning brought snow-only visitors - Whitethroats, Song Sparrows, and
Juncos, and oodles of Siskins and G-finches. The Siskins were landing on my
broom - couldn't wait for me to finish cleaning the snow off the balcony
rail. I held some sunflower seed in my hand and it wasn't very long before a
Siskin staked it out as his own. Sort of like having a personal 2-ounce
bodyguard perched in my hand. Many tried, many failed, to unseat my
protector.
Apparently somebody spread the word that I was a huge and vicious predator
because my body guard and everyone else took off and refused to come back
until I went inside.
Of course, a bit later I heard a noise and looked up in time to see the
underside of a real vicious predator. Too quick to identify - the local
Accipiter no doubt. Figured one would show up with all those little
finch-snacks around. Didn't appear he got anything though.
