There are still several reliable locations for Horned Lark in Calvert County. The location that Fred talks about is at the intersection of Mackall and Cage Rds. on the way to Jefferson Patterson Park. You can also find them in the fields along Lloyd Bowen Rd. which is off of Mackall Rd. Another good location is Turner Rd. off of Mill Bridge Rd. This spot is also often good for shorebirds in the spring if there has been some recent rainfall.

Cage and Mackall is my old reliable spot for the SMAS birdathon. It's also a good location for Grasshopper Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlark and Bobolink. There used to be Northern Bobwhites along the creek bed that follows Cage Rd. but I haven't heard any there in years.

Rick,

Check your breeding bird atlas book. There were never very many Horned Larks in Calvert County

HI Fred,
I know this statement was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but are there  really
that few Horned Larks in Calvert County? Is it just from declining  habitat,
over-development, what? It's been several years since I've been down  that way,
and I seem to recall lots of new homes going in where once there  were nice
tobacco farms, but are there any other reasons for their decline  there?

Horned  Larks, my Calvert nemesis, to the roadside, we drove along the
road to  Jefff-Patterson Park this evening, and indeed did spot one -
perhaps the  last Horned Lark in Calvert  County
