This morning at 9:20 I stepped outside my home in South Anne Arundel County and heard the sound of a great many excited swans.  They sounded as if they were a small distance away.  I looked everywhere – especially waaay up high – but did not see any swans.  From the sound, however, I suspect they must have been either gathering for or actually migrating.

Shortly after that, I had a report from a friend just slightly north and east of me, on the Mayo Peninsula, who heard swans very loudly this morning also.  When he stepped outside, he spotted about forty swans, in V formation, flying to the North West very high above his home.

So I went over to Mayo and we walked his beach, where about 30 Tundras have over wintered this year.   The bay and Ramsey Lake were absent of both swan and swan sound.  We did not check Big Pond at Mayo Beach, but I suspect the local swans have departed this morning.

In their stead, we spotted our first Osprey of the season, flying over Ramsey Lake.
