Despite the foggy start this morning, I decided to bird my way down to try to find the Northern Shrike in Queen Anne's County. Driving south on Rte. 213, I had about a half dozen TREE SWALLOWS along the Bohemia River. My first stop was Round Top Rd and Kibler Rd. , but could not find the Shrike. Afterwards, I decided to drive to Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge. The TUNDRA SWAN numbers were amazing! Some CANVASBACKS and SCAUP as well as good numbers of RUDDY DUCKS rounded out the waterfowl show. I heard and seen my FOY EASTERN TOWHEE. Driving down some back roads through many farmlands, I ended up at the end of Broadneck Rd. in Kent County. Had some more CANVASBACKS, but the best bird was a PINE WARBLER in a white pine grove. I just love these little friendly birds with their sweet song! It was almost getting dark, but I decided to try again for the Shrike and I am so glad I did! I parked at Kibler Rd. and looked again at the tree line bordering Round Top Rd. and spotted a bird with my binoculars. I got my scope on the bird and success! The NORTHERN SHRIKE in all it's glory! It didn't stick around too long but long enough for me to enjoy it before flying off into the field adjacent to Chino Farms. A nice ending to a great birding day!
