Hi Folks,
A male Painted Bunting showed up in a Howard Co. back yard on Wednesday
(3/11), and was photographed by the home owners. Sadly, the bird was a
10-minute wonder. I visited the yard the following day for about an hour,
but the bird was not seen, nor has it been seen since. The homeowners are
the parents of two of my former students. This is the second documented
record of Painted Bunting in Howard Co.; neither bird is known to have been
seen by any member of the Howard Co. Bird Club or MOS. I was sent the
photos, which I will forward to both the Howard Co. and Maryland Records
Committees.
Today (Sat., 14 March), the Howard Co. Bird Club had its annual March
waterfowl walk. Highlights were SEVEN Red-necked Grebes and 13 White-winged
Crossbills. A summary follows:

After the walk I visited the Race Rd. wetland in Elkridge, and found:

It was a great day to be out, with the total lack of wind. The water on the
lakes and reservoir was mostly like glass.
