Saw a single Yellow-crowned Night Heron today along Sligo Creek at the "tennis court" nest sight (last year's arrival date at this site: March 15). This site is just upstream from the intersection of Sligo Creek Parkway and Piney Branch Road. From the parking lot by the tennis court, proceed on foot upstream to a bridge crossing the creek. The remains of a heron nest are plainly visible looking upstream from the bridge high up in the trees. 

Last year, I found none of the nests along Sligo Creek between New Hampshire Avenue and Colesville Road to be active after brief activity in late March - this after several years of successful nesting. It would be nice if that changes this year.
