And I have seen a pair of (male) Orchard Orioles doing the same thing,  right 
in front of a female, and battling in the air and on the ground (like  Jim's 
pair of BAOR), like they were locked in mortal combat. Right in front of  the 
main gate/fence at Blue Mash, where they nest regularly.

Pennyfield Lock.  In that case they stayed locked in combat all the  way to 
the ground and ended up in the road before they let go and flew off  in a 
chase.
