Hi Everyone,

I ran into Ed Carlson and Matt Grey at Fort Smallwood this afternoon and
spent
about 5x more time scanning the Bay than I'd planned. Highlights were newly
arrived Red-throated Loons, good counts of Gadwall and Horned Grebes, and
watching via scope as a Great Blue Heron ate a small catfish. I love catfish

and I love sushi, but I'd never thought to combine the two until this
afternoon. Full list below.

Canada Goose--14
Gadwall--27; * Exact count continues on the pond since yesterday; winter
flock
of 9-12 supplemented by recent arrivals; my high count at the park
Green-winged Teal (American)--6
Greater Scaup--15; all close scaup were Greater
Greater/Lesser Scaup--30
Bufflehead--75
Red-throated Loon--5; starting to move apparently; one was in Baltimore Co.,

visible from point nearest to White Rocks
Common Loon--1; in breeding plumage on Rock Creek
Horned Grebe--68; * Scoped from three locations in the park; a minority
approaching full breeding plumage; many in small groups of 5-13; my new high

count for the park; Stan Arnold and I counted 24 yesterday while making the
same three stops
Double-crested Cormorant--56; carefully scoped White Rocks; they were still
arriving to roost when I left
Great Blue Heron--1; caught, juggled, and ate a small catfish; watched via
scope from about 30'; very cool
Turkey Vulture--1; migrant
Osprey--2; one migrant
Killdeer--3
Ring-billed Gull--4
Herring Gull--15
Great Black-backed Gull--12
Mourning Dove--2
Red-bellied Woodpecker--2
Downy Woodpecker--1
Northern Flicker (Yellow-shafted)--1
Blue Jay--1
American Crow--1
Tufted Titmouse--2
Carolina Wren--1
Golden-crowned Kinglet--1
American Robin--2
Northern Mockingbird--1
European Starling--15

White-throated Sparrow--1

Good birding!

Bill
