George,

I have lived in Owings for over 2 years. This is my first sighting of a turkey in years. At 8 am this morning as I went out to the mailboxes near the woods edge, I saw a large dark bird sauntering down from the street, slowly zigzagging thru the woods and then continued along the ridgeline. I saw the waddle but could not tell if it was male of female.

    Folks

Shortly after 6 PM my neighbor Zeke called to tell me there was a flock of Wild Turkeys in his yard. They were heading toward the road. I quickly went outside and counted the 17 birds as they carefully walked across Mill Hill Road between burst of passing vehicles. All but two were females.

Today in our yard I had a pair of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers doing some pre-breeding behavior. The male would drum on a hard dead tree, then the female would fly to the tree he was drumming on. I heard the male say, "Buy you a drink?" Really. They should be heading north soon. I wish them safe passage and a successful breeding season.
