YCNH Pair at Nest
Paul & I took advantage of a break in the rain today to walk the bike path
from Winans Meadow in Leakin Park and along Franklintown Road. We've
wondered where the Yellow-crowned Night Herons that used to nest along
Windsor Mill Road have gone, and so we paid particular attention to looking
for nests as we walked along Dead Run. From the parking lot on the east
side of Mill Race Tavern, which seems to have gone out of business, we were
able to find one pair of herons on the close side of the stream, and not
very far above eye level; perched beside a nest, raising and lowering their
feathers. We were a little concerned about disturbing them in a way we
weren't in the past when the birds we were viewing were much further away.
We found a second nest that could be seen from the parking lot as well.
