YCNH Pair at Nest

Paul & I took advantage of a break in the rain today to walk the bike path 
from Winans Meadow in Leakin Park and along Franklintown Road.  We've 
wondered where the Yellow-crowned Night Herons that used to nest along 
Windsor Mill Road have gone, and so we paid particular attention to looking 
for nests as we walked along Dead Run.  From the parking lot on the east 
side of Mill Race Tavern, which seems to have gone out of business, we were 
able to find one pair of herons on the close side of the stream, and not 
very far above eye level; perched beside a nest, raising and lowering their 
feathers. We were a little concerned about disturbing them in a way we 
weren't in the past when the birds we were viewing were much further away. 
We found a second nest that could be seen from the parking lot as well. 
Other birds seen today included:

Black Vulture

Turkey Vulture

Cooper's Hawk

Red-tailed Hawk

Rock Pigeon

Morning Dove

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Downy Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker

Eastern Phoebe (including pair)

Blue Jay

American Crow

Fish Crow (flock)

Carolina Chickadee

Tufted Titmouse

White-breasted Nuthatch (including pair)

Carolina Wren

American Robin

White-throated Sparrow

Dark-eyed Junco

Brown-headed Cowbird

American Goldfinch
