Hi Folks,
It's the time of year when anything can happen, and anything did happen once
again: a N. GOSHAWK flew over our Ferndale yard around 1:30 p.m. yesterday
(Friday 4/3). It was an immature, and was heading to the northwest. This
is our second over the yard, the first one being in Nov 2007, when an imm
bird flew over heading west, and then was found by Ed Boyd at BWI airport
shortly thereafter.
School let out early yesterday, so I headed over to Oxbow Lake around noon,
where I found birds previously reported. Notable for me were N. SHOVELER
(3), BONAPARTE'S GULL (1), CASPIAN TERN (3) and BARN SWALLOW (1); there were
also 21 Snipe, all concentrated along the shoreline of the north peninsula
due to the high water. I then came home for a short spell between rain
showers when I lucked into the goshawk, and then headed over to the Swan
Creek Wetland and Cox Creek Dredged Material Facility at the end of Kembo
Rd. in northeastern AA Co. (within sight of the Key Bridge). Most notable
finds were two adult LITTLE BLUE HERONs at the wetland, and there were also
three CASPIAN TERNs among scores of Herring Gulls at one of the big sludge
impoundments.
Enjoy the wind today.
