I saw an interesting immature swan today at Jug Bay that mostly stayed at Billingsley Marsh (PG side, just above the mouth of Western Branch). I watched it on and off between 11-5. I could not positively id it, but I suspect it may be a Trumpeter. I tried to get a digiscope picture but I am terrible at this and was not successful.
It had the right head/bill profile, a very stout neck, and just seemed like a Trumpeter to me. Regarding the "V" shape versus "U" feather pattern on the front of head, it was kind of dirty, and distant, so I had trouble. It seemed to be a triangle shape, but not as obvious as what is shown in Sibley's guide. If anyone is out at Jug Bay this weekend, take a careful look if you see a lone swan. If it is out and I can get a closer view, I will do so and post the results.
I also saw 2 DUNLIN here today (FOY)! They were with a group of snipe and yellowlegs on a flat next to the river, feeding and loafing at about 6 PM. I forgot how long their bill is!!
Cheers-
