Dear Maryland Birders,

It's almost that time of year for getting out and counting populations of our more vulnerable breeding bird species in order to identify Maryland's remaining Important Bird Areas. With your help in doing these surveys Bird Blitz has ebaled us to document 8 new IBAs in recent years: Patapsco Valley IBA, Prettyboy IBA, South River Greenway IBA, Lower C & O Canal IBA, Tuckahoe Creek IBA, Idylwild IBA, Nanticoke IBA, and Monocacy Grasslands IBA.

This year's Bird Blitz effort will be significantly improved over previous years - Audubon Maryland-DC recently hired David Yeany II as IBA Program Assistant, in the role of Bird Blitz Coordinator. This position has been made possible by generous funding provided by a MOS Research Grant, a State Wildlife Grant from Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and an Innovation Grant from the Toyota/Audubon Together Green partnership. David comes to the IBA Program fresh from completing his Masters in Applied Ecology and Conservation Biology at Frostburg State University, where he conducted thesis research under Dr Frank Ammer on the bird community of Finzel Swamp in Garrett County.

David is already busy analyzing GIS data layers, preparing field maps for volunters to use, and updating the IBA Program website for this year's Bird Blitz effort. He will be in contact with the list shortly with more details of Bird Blitz 2009.

Please join me in welcoming David to the IBA Program!

Dave
