I made a very quick run up through parts of Frederick County before work this morning. I was hoping for Caspian Terns (seen yesterday at Lily pons by Barbara Gearhart) and Common Loon (seen by Marcia Balestri at the Monocacy River Aqueduct). I struck out on both of these. It was a beautiful morning nevertheless.
I birded only from the road at Lily Pons from 6 AM until 6:30 and had gobbling WILD TURKEYS calling off and on the entire time coming from the direction of the Monacacy River. Other birds of note were a flyover BLUE-WINGED TEALS and ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS.
I then went to Noland's Ferry and saw only several DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS on the River. I did hear my first N. PARULA WARBLER of the year singing from the top of a sycamore tree.
My last stop was at the Monacacy Aqueduct which I crossed and then walked out to the edge of the Potomac River. I spent about 30 minutes here. Birds of note included 5 WOOD DUCKS, 7 D.-C. CORMORANTS, 1 OSPREY, 1 adult BALD EAGLE, 1 RED-SHOULDERD HAWK. There were also several singing YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and 2 singing PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS.
Unfortunately my next stop was work; but only until 1 PM. Then I am headed up to Green Ridge State Forest camping for the weekend and 2 days of birding in Alleghany & Garrett Counties.
Should be a great weekend for everybody to get out!
