Hi all,
Times are tough so you gotta love free entertainment. I stayed home all
weekend catching up on yard work, grass cutting, etc. So I figured I could
devote some morning time to birding from the deck, and managed almost 40
species on Saturday and another 5 species today that I missed on Saturday. From
roughly 8:30 till 10 and some more around lunchtime yesterday, I saw :
22 Common Loons flying over (early birds were flying fairly low, and as the
morning wore on the flew by higher)
2 Osprey
3 American Kestrels
Northern Harrier
21 Broad-winged Hawks
Cooper's Hawk(s)
Sharp-shinned Hawk
Red-tailed Hawk
Red-shouldered Hawk (one carrying a snake as it flew into the woods)
Turkey Vulture
Black Vulture
Chipping Sparrow
Field Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Song Sparrow
N. Cardinal
E. Bluebird
A.Robin
N.Mockingbird
Brown Thrasher
Tree Swallow
Barn Swallow
N. Flicker
Downy W.P.
R.B. Woodpecker
Blue Jay
A.Crow
House Finch
A.Goldfinch
E. Starling
H. Sparrow
R.W. Blackbird
M. Dove
C. Goose
C. Chickadee
T. Titmouse
Eastern Meadowlark
This morning (Sunday) I added Great Blue Heron, Common Grackle, a single
Dark-eyed Junco, a "brownie' Purple Finch at the feeders, and still 2
lingering Pine Siskins. Also had the meadowlark sitting in a tree in the yard
singing this morning, and 3 Brown Thrashers chasing each other around the
trees.
Odd misses for the yard; White-breasted Nuthatch (they've been regular at
the feeders), and B H Cowbirds (they've been around lately too).
More Sharpies, Broad-wings and Kestrels were passing over late this
afternoon in front of the clouds/front moving in.
Not a bad weekend of free entertainment, since I didn't have to drive
anywhere! And I got all caught up on the yard!
