   Catching up on recent observations locally. Passerine migration had been a little late this spring until the recent heat wave drove many species into the area. 

   On Sunday, 4/26, the Carroll County Bird Club field trip to McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley SP produced some surprises and early records: 

Spotted Sandpiper  1 

Solitary Sandpiper  5, in one flock 

Yellow-billed Cuckoo  1, first April record for the county & an early record by five days 

Acadian Flycatcher  2, heard only, ties the county arrival record 

Great Crested Flycatcher  2, heard only 

White-eyed Vireo  1 

Yellow-throated Vireo  6 

Blue-headed Vireo  1 

Red-eyed Vireo  4 

Parula  20 

Black-throated Blue Warbler  1, record early by one day here 

BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER  1 singing male, found by Jerry Tarbell, record early by nine days here 

Cerulean Warbler  2, heard only 

Black-&-white Warbler  4 

Redstart  1 adult male 

Worm-eating Warbler  2 

Ovenbird  6 

Northern Waterthrush  1, singing, also seen in Howard Co. 

Louisiana Waterthrush  3 

Scarlet Tanager  2, ties the county arrival record 

Indigo Bunting  2 



   On Monday, 4/27, birding around the county by myself: 

Ruddy Duck  1 on Cranberry Reservoir 

DC Cormorant  4, Cranberry Reservoir 

Virginia Rail  3, heard at Union Mills 

Sora  2 heard at Union Mills 

Solitary Sandpiper  3 at Union Mills 

Woodcock  1, flushed at home while walking the dog, probably a late migrant 

Red-headed Woodpecker  1 on Sixes Bridge Road & 1 heard on Keysville-Bruceville Road 

Vesper Sparrow  1 heard singing on Sharrett Road 

White-crowned Sparrow  2 adults at home 

Orchard Oriole  2, a pair on Keysville-Bruceville Road 



   Today, 4/28, in the Liberty Watershed at Bollinger Mill Road the highlights were: 

Solitary Sandpiper  6 

Hooded Warbler  8
