Bunch of Gene Kelly birds out there this AM - singing in the rain. None of
them danced much.
Seems like every other warbler I got my bins on was a YELLOW-RUMPED. I could
hear Carl Sagan in my mind - "billions and billions". There were some of
the others around. Nice looks at the usual SD regulars - PRAIRIE WARBLER,
PINE WARBLER and NORTHERN PARULA. Also had a REDSTART, but couldn't get a
visual.
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. I had 2 of those playing territory games with one to
my left and one to my right. Both singing and making sure the other one
heard. I got them both in the bins. Naturally I liked the one on the left
better.
Also some migrants - BLACK-THROATED BLUES and GREENS and CHESTNUT-SIDED.
In the non-warbler category a SCARLET TANAGER posed nicely against a tree
trunk to make him easy to spot.
However since it had not rained for about half an hour, I dropped my
raincoat off at the truck before I started over to the Summer Tanager side
of the road. Never do that if you really want to see one. Sure enough a
steady rain drove me back before I got to the hot spot for them.
It's supposed to rain off and on for about a week. If this goes on beyond
that to, say, the forty days and forty nights bit ... (fill in your own
blanks).
