Hi all,
Stayed at home yesterday for my daughters birthday and tending to our DL
dog, who is having surgery next Tuesday for a torn ligament.
Anyway, it was another great morning for "local" birding, as I ended the
day with 50 species plus an adult Empid sp. which did not utter a note.

Highlights, Saturday May 2

Savannah Sparrow by the back door
Both Oriole species, with many singing Baltimore's
male Indigo Bunting (rather rare here)
Yellow Warbler, singing and well seen
Loads of cardinals, Blue Jays, and goldfinches (esp. Blue Jays!)
 3 Pine Siskins
2 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS, sitting together in a tree, one calling, at 4:30 PM
Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a spectacular male at the feeders, briefly around
6-6:30 PM
Red-shouldered Hawk carrying food back and forth to nest all day
Catbird, Mockingbird and Thrasher
E. Kingbirds and Great-crested Flycatcher
Male and female hummers
Scarlet Tanager, male
E. Towhee

On Friday afternoon I had an adult White-crowned Sparrow sitting on the
walkway in the backyard, only steps from our deck, picking at a dandelion. It
pays not to be too fastidious with lawn care!

Yesterday morning I saw what I thought were 4 separate small flocks of
Bobolinks fly over from the fields next door, but I was unable to get out in
the yard in time to get certain looks as they went over the house, flying
north. With the rain and the overcast skies and bad lighting, it made ID
impossible. I spent a lot of the day while it was raining on our back deck under
the awning.

This morning, about 6:25 AM I was standing on the side porch with coffee
and suddenly looked up to see the Rose-breasted Grosbeak had returned and was
sitting in a covered feeder eating sunflower seed. I tried backing into
the house to get the camera, but it flew. Later I was able to get photos of
it perched in the persimmon tree, hunkered down in the rain. Also this
morning, I counted Yard Bird # 116, an adult NASHVILLE WARBLER as it flew in and
perched very briefly in a maple tree in the side yard!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend,
