I saw the SEDGE WREN in Patterson Park in Baltimore about 1:30
this afternoon. At first I tried following Dave Curson's suggestions
for viewing the wren from the boardwalk, but without success. The
two guys who were walking back and forth on the boardwalk with
their off-the-leash pit bull - and who wanted to engage me in
conversation about orioles and redwings - probably didn't help.
So, I tried another approach: I went back to the west end of the
boardwalk and walked up the grassy bank, on the other side of the
decorative metal fence. I stood under a large tree at the top of
the hill and searched for the wren from there. Eventually,
realizing that I was becoming very wet, I decided to give up. As
I was walking back down the hill, the wren flushed from the long
grass inside the fence. It flew to one of the small willows along
the boardwalk, where it gave me a couple of good but brief looks
before it disappeared. A great county bird!
After that I went up to Swan Harbor Farm in Harford County, where
I saw many of the good birds reported by Kye Jenkins on Friday
(and as an added benefit, I wasn't getting rained on while sitting in
the blind). Highlights included the following:
Pied-billed Grebe - 2, seen and heard
Great Egret - 1
Wood Duck - 2, flew from the pond
Bald Eagle - 1 adult
Sora - calling repeatedly
Greater Yellowlegs - 2 or 3
Lesser Yellowlegs - 4+
Solitary Sandpiper - 1
Least Sandpiper - 10+
Wilson' Snipe - 1
Good (although wet) birding!
