I've visited Hains Pt 4 times in the past 2 days, but don't have a whole
lot more to add than what Gail & Clive posted. What I can add is that
most of what was seen today was there yesterday in terms of GULLS (c.200
RING-BILLEDS with a few HERRING & GREAT BLACK-BACKED) and passerines. I
birded a little with Frank Hawkins on Sunday morning, and I think he
counted 40+ CATBIRDS. They were all over the place. He also had the
VEERY, a couple of WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and the best bird of the day
- a LINCOLN'S SPARROW. Swift and swallow numbers have been high both
days - with 5 species of swallow yesterday (incl. MARTIN, c.10 BANK
SWALLOWS (a firly high count for this species in DC), TREE, BARN & NO.
ROUGH-WINGED) and 4 today (no MARTINS). No Cliffs either day. Other
passerines of note today that I didn't see/hear Sunday were SCARLET
TANAGER & ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. Warblers yesterday not reported by
others include "Yellow" PALM WARBLER and AMERICAN REDSTART.

The only shorebird I saw on Sunday was 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER. But this
morning I saw 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS (north end of the golf course) and
this afternoon I saw 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and 4
LEAST SANDPIPERS (between the north end of the golf course and the pond
behind the last bathroom). I did not see any terns either day, but did
see the CATTLE EGRET this afternoon (golf course near the first parking
pull off past the gate). Gorgeous bird in high plumage!

Another interesting DC sighting, though not at Hains Pt., was a female
COMMON MERGANSER at Kenilworth Aquatic Garden on Saturday, found by Gary
Allport. No sign of nesting, but still a good bird for May. We could
not relocate the King Rail.

Good birding,
