I got out of class a little early this afternoon, rushed home to
cut the grass (the front yard was on its way to becoming suitable
Sedge Wren habitat), then made it up to Centennial Lake in Columbia
by about 5:30. The COMMON MOORHEN was still present on the
same small island, just to the east of the floats marking the "wildlife
end" of the lake. This time it was at the western tip of the island
(nearest the floats). It emerged from the vegetation on the island,
settled into the water and picked at the surface for a minute or two,
then disappeared back into the vegetation.
I also sat on a bench near the boat ramp and watched the swallows
for awhile. Among the many Tree and Barn Swallows, I managed to
pick out one CLIFF SWALLOW and one BANK SWALLOW. Also present
on the south shore of the lake were several YELLOW WARBLERS and at
least two WARBLING VIREOS.
