Hi everybody,
This past Monday we initiated our field season at Patuxent and
I am currently working down at Blackwater NWR for the next few
weeks. Today, while driving down Maple Dam road about 3/4ths of
a mile north of the Blackwateer River bridge, we saw and counted
64 Bald Eagles in a very short stretch of about 1/8th of a mile
of the road! They were all in the Loblolly Pines on the north
side of the road and about 75-80% were young birds (dark plumaged). Although I have seen dozens of BAEA's at Blackwater before, I have
never seen this many in such a small area. While out in the marsh,
I found a few whole dead Carp in the more open areas of water, and
wondered if this might explain the concentration of eagles that were
not that far from here.
