Hi again,
To add to my thread regarding the orioles and their nest; today I
disassembled a portable greenhouse we had on our deck. It was held to the deck
railing with a sisal twine, and after I removed the greenhouse, I took the
leftover twine, cut off the knots and asked my daughter to throw it out to see
if the orioles would take it. Later in the afternoon we noticed the female
was in the vegetable garden picking at the twine on my pea towers (I have
tepee-like structures with twine wrapped around them for the peas to climb).
We walked over to the garden and picked up the twine my daughter had
thrown out, and unwrapped it into individual strands, throwing it along the
fence and into the garden, then walked back up and sat on the deck. A short
while later, the female oriole came back down, tugged briefly at the pea twine
again, then located the strands we had left her. She then continued to
pick these up and was using them in her nest. The ultimate in recycling!

And regarding my note on calling them the Alpha orioles; both the male and
female of this pair are very brightly marked individuals. The male is
nearly fluorescent, and the female is so heavily marked that at first I thought
she was a male. She has a dull but nearly fully black head, and is more
strongly marked that the adult female in the big Sibley guide. A truly
beautiful pair!

And we have been watching a beautiful pair of (Alpha) Baltimore Orioles
building a nest in another cherry tree in our yard, very close to our
fence,
but low enough to nearly touch.
