Hi all,
Around noon I was walking out back to shoot some pictures of yard birds
and thinking to myself that as migration is about over, I'd have to wait
till fall migration to hope for any new yard species. Just about that time I
thought I heard a chat chattering from the corner of the yard, then when I
told my wife this, I saw a Baltimore Oriole leaving from the same area and
decided that was probably what I heard. After shooting some pics of the Tree
Swallows in a box in our backyard, I began hearing the chattering again so
I moved close to the fence and waited. After a bit, it began again, and
after a really long wait standing out in the hot sun, I was rewarded with a
brief but good look at yard bird #119, a male YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT! It
continued to call off and on for at least an hour, and I went to the house and
got my daughter to help me look again. While it continued to call, we never
did see it again, but the habitat is good (mostly on the far side of the
shrubby area facing my neighbors farm fields) so maybe it will linger here.

And yesterday morning I heard a calling cuckoo from afar but it never came
closer to our yard so cannot tell which species it was. Just a distant
calling coo coo coo. I was hoping for Black-billed again, and maybe a nesting
pair, so I will continue to listen for them as well.

Happy Memorial Day,
