As usual at this time of year, I checked my Prothonotary nest boxes along
the C&O Canal towpath. Results were disappointing.
Rileys 1 - Empty
Rileys 2 - Filled to the brim with nesting material, with new moss on top.
Looks like the last was brought in by a chickadee.
Rileys 3 - Old bluebird nest. Empty, young had apparently fledged. This
nest was built this spring.
Rileys 4 - 1 newly hatched, four warbler eggs
Rileys 5 - Empty
Rileys 6 - Five titmice eggs, angry parents.
Violets 1 - Wasp infested. Evicted.
Blockhouse point 1 - Empty
Hughes Hollow - Vandalism has occurred multiple times, so no longer
maintaining.
This is the fewest nesting warblers I have encountered in fifteen years or
more. Cause? Hopefully second nestings or late first will occur.
