When I observed geese for the NJ Fish & Game folks, I saw that once the
goslings were a day or two old, geese would combine families, and so two or
three pairs would get together and all take turns taking care of the young.
Maybe the other adults were having a Memorial Day celebration around the
corner, and the pair you saw were the babysitters?
