This morning (Fri, 5/22) I saw a WILD TURKEY along the maintenance road
at the south end of Hains Pt. It's got to be one of the last birds I
expected to see at this spot. The bird (an adult hen, I think) was
feeding in the tall grass on the channel side. I didn't get out of my
car because I didn't want to harass it. I can't imagine that it will
stick around once the activity picks up this morning.

On another note, I was walking down 7th St., NW in Gallery Place
yesterday and saw a female AMERICAN KESTREL circling fairly low
overhead. The bird eventually entered a small hole in the eaves of the
building that houses La Tosca restaurant. This is between G & H St.,
NW. Surely it's nesting there. The kestrels that nested near my office
(DOT building in SE between the Nats stadium and the Navy Yard) in 2007
have not been seen this year (except for a one-day sighting) nor were
they around in 2008. All this new construction (our building included)
must have scared them off.

Good birding,
