I led a field trip to Conowingo Dam this morning
and my biggest surprise was the number of eagles
present. I counted 91 on the towers and the rocks
between the island and the dam. There were more
downstream from the island, so there were easily
over 100 eagles there this morning. Most were
immature but there were a fair number of adults
present. I guess the fishing must be good.
Does anyone have a guess why there are so many
eagles there at this time of year? These numbers
usually don't appear until the fall.

The eagle looked down on the river below
And he wrapped his wings round him and he fell
like a stone
And the big salmon fought but the talons held true
And he shuddered as the world turned from silver
to blue
