I spent a couple of hours mid-morning driving some of the roads in the western part of the county. Along Mt. Nebo road, at the bend just after the junction with W. Offutt Rd I heard a VESPER SPARROW singing. I got out and finally located it high in a tree facing onto a field on the N side of the road. It then flushed some distance and resumed singing.
I stopped along Elmer School Rd, just S of the junction of Club Hollow Rd on hearing several Grasshopper Sparrows singing from a field across from the NIH facility. The field has some short grass nearer the road and much longer grass in the rest of the field. As well as at least 4 different Grasshopper Sparrows there were several pairs of Eastern Meadowlark. I also heard what sounded exactly like a Henslow's Sparrow, calling from further back in the field. It called repeatedly over a 15 minute period, and when I stopped at the same spot 30 mins later I heard it several times again. I could not see it though (the rolling terrain doesn't help) and at times was straining to hear it over all the other birds including a Mockingbird, so am not confident in saying it was definitely this species.
As well as those species I also saw Chipping and Field Sparrows in good numbers and a single Song Sparrow. No shorebirds in any of the many pools that have formed in the fields.
